GPO leader Mike Schreiner made the following statement in response to the government’s announcement to cancel green energy projects:
“The Liberals could find real savings to reduce electricity prices. They could cancel the billions they’ve committed to rebuild outdated nuclear plants.
If the goal is to save you money on your hydro bill, the Liberals have chosen the wrong target in attacking renewable energy.
Just last week, OPG applied to increase the price of nuclear power by 180% over the next decade. This should be a wake up call for the Liberals. Instead, they hit the wrong alarm button.
Ontario has excess electricity supply. This is a reality the Liberals just seem to have woken up to today. Yet they plow ahead with wasting billions on nuclear – a technology that has never delivered a project on time or budget in Ontario’s history.
If this government is serious about making the best decisions to save us money, they would conduct an independent, public review of nuclear costs and alternatives. Yet they refuse.
By throwing billions at nuclear instead of cheaper alternatives like water power from Quebec – electricity prices will keep increasing.
But now Queen’s Park can’t blame wind and solar for rising electricity bills any more.”
