Green Party leader Mike Schreiner issued the following statement in response to the Liberal government’s Speech from the Throne:

“The Liberal’s hydro subsidy is bad policy. It is wrong for the government to use your money to buy your vote.

The electricity subsidy is a band aid. It won’t fix expensive mistakes such as moving gas plants, selling off Hydro One and wasting billions to rebuild outdated nuclear plants.

If the Liberals were serious about reducing electricity bills, they would provide support for people to save money by saving energy.

Conservation — reducing the amount of energy we use — is the cheapest solution. It saves you money on your electricity bill. Plus it saves the province money since fewer dollars are needed for new generation.

Ontario already produces more electricity than we need. Yet the Liberals are planning to spend billions on expensive nuclear rebuilds, even though lower cost alternatives are available.

The Green Party would cancel nuclear rebuilds, meet our energy needs through cheaper water power from Quebec and use the billion dollar annual savings to invest in your home.

People want permanent solutions to our energy needs, not politically motivated band aids that will only cost us more.

Greens are on a mission to bring honesty, integrity and good public policy to Queen’s Park.”
