The GPO is focused on solutions to clean up the fundraising mess at Queen’s Park – immediately.

I indicated to the Premier that this is our top priority.

The process to develop reforms must be open, fair and democratic. I challenged the Premier to work with opposition parties. We all need to agree on a way forward that prevents the government from using its majority to impose changes to their benefit.

The Premier and I had a constructive discussion. The Premier was receptive to my suggestions and indicated a willingness to work together on solutions.

My hope is that I can play a constructive role as an honest mediator. I believe we can develop a process that all parties can agree is fair, while at the same time moving reform forward as soon as possible.

As a starting point for a conversation on fundraising reform, I presented the Premier with the the GPO’s ideas for change.

We have broad consensus that corporate and union donations need to be eliminated immediately – so let’s get that done. And we need to introduce per vote funding as a more democratic way of funding political parties.

I am reaching out to the other opposition leaders to discuss ways we can bring solutions forward quickly. We need to get big money out of politics as soon as possible.
