Statement from Green Party leader Mike Schreiner on Human Rights Day:
“Today, as we reflect on the state of human rights in Ontario and around the world, it is a painful reality that our fight is far from over. Sixty-four years since the adaptation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), there are still many parts of the world where individuals are neither ‘free’ nor ‘equal’. Discrimination, cruelty, persecution and even death, are still a too frequent occurrence.
Gandhi is famously quoted as saying to “be the change you want to see in the world.” This rings true today more than ever.
We at the Green Party of Ontario stand firmly behind our core values of social justice, non-violence, gender equality, diversity and personal and global responsibility. These are the values we strive to uphold in our personal and political lives.
It is clear that we must continue to fight against oppressive behavior and governments, intolerance, prejudice and all other forms of discrimination. By working together, we can inspire social justice and secure human rights here in Ontario and around the world.”
