Statement by Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner on the death of the Honourable Lincoln MacCauley Alexander
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of the Honourable Lincoln MacCauley Alexander. Lincoln Alexander was the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Canada’s first black MP and a hero to many, including me.
Mr. Alexander was a trailblazer for equality in Canada. In addition to being the first black MP, he was a partner in the first interracial law firm in Canada; the first person of colour to be appointed to the Cabinet; and the first black Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, among many other accomplishments.
He was also the longest-serving Chancellor of the University of Guelph, where he served a record five terms and was named chancellor emeritus.
I would like to share my condolences with the members of Mr. Alexander’s family. May he rest in peace and may you find comfort in our prayers.”
