North Bay, Ontario – Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner reinforced his disappointment in the Metrolinx contract process. Schreiner has called for an immediate suspension of the contract which awarded an out-of-province firm a contract for transit refurbishment.
“The decision to choose an out-of-province firm instead of Ontario Northland, despite their excellent record on coach refurbishment and the strong connection to the local economy, is worrisome,” said Schreiner. “Strong economies with good local jobs provide a tax base that support strong communities. It’s important for the province to take into consideration the net benefit to Ontario when making purchasing decisions.”
Ontario Northland, located in North Bay, recently lost out on the Metrolinx award, with a bid approximately 0.017% higher than the winning bid. Yet this decision could cost the province in the long run, in terms of lower tax revenue and lost jobs. The Green Party pledged to support companies like Northland through a full review of procurement policies.
“By supporting Ontario Northland and other Ontario companies, we are investing in Ontario’s future prosperity and strengthening our local communities,” said Schreiner.
The Green Party of Ontario commits to working with local communities in the north to ensure that future development is done in a sustainable manner that respects local communities, First Nations and the environment. The Green Party also commits to policies that ensure future developments in the North keep local processing plants, associated jobs and revenue in Northern Communities.
Politics as usual is working at Queen`s Park. It’s time for transparent and accountable government that supports the development of vibrant local economies.
