The Green Party of Ontario’s Five-Point Plan for Ontario’s future confronts energy costs head-on, an issue front of mind for Ontarians facing rising energy bills. It also includes support for Ontario’s economy, with a call for lower income taxes and a freeze in post-secondary tuition costs. These are key planks in the Green Party of Ontario (GPO)’s platform for the fall 2011 election, released today by leader Mike Schreiner at Queen’s Park.

“Ontario needs a practical Green vision now more than ever. We need to tackle the challenges facing our generation – rising energy prices, climate change and spiralling health care costs. Only the Green Party has a vision to turn these challenges into opportunities to rebuild our local economies, reconnect our communities and promote the health and well-being of all Ontarians,” said Schreiner.

The Green Party is the only party offering true, realistic options to save on energy bills in the long term – by prioritizing energy efficiency and conservation. This includes an expanded energy retrofit program that will help home owners, landlords and tenants save money today, tomorrow and years from now.

Joined by candidates, shadow cabinet members and supporters, Schreiner delivered the Green Party’s vision for a fresh new approach to Ontario politics.  The platform offers a bold vision for a financially, socially and environmentally sustainable Ontario:

  1. Creating jobs for a twenty first century economy
  2. Harnessing safe, affordable energy to power our communities
  3. Promoting access to quality, sustainable health care close to home
  4. Feeding our communities by championing local farms
  5. Delivering government that works for people

Capitalizing on the momentum from electing the first Green MP in Canadian history, the Green Party of Ontario is ready to bring fresh ideas and a positive to new approach to Queen’s Park.

In the 2007 provincial election, 354,897 Ontarians voted Green.  Green Party candidates placed second or third in 18 ridings, with one candidate getting 33% of the popular vote in their race. The Green Party placed 3rd in two recent by-elections.  Nationally, Elizabeth May became the first Green MP in the House of Commons in the May 2nd, 2011 federal election.
