About Shanta

Shanta Sundarason is a community organizer who has been volunteering in Markham for nearly a decade. She is eager to use that activist spirit to be a strong voice for the residents of Markham—Unionville at Queen’s Park.

An architect and hospitality designer trained in the UK, Shanta moved to Canada twelve years ago and has been a social justice activist ever since. As the founder of The Giving Tree, a social justice group teaching young people how to be responsible citizens, Shanta believes in empowering future generations to become change makers. She is a recipient of the Governor General’s award for her volunteer efforts.

Instrumental in stopping of the GO train horns throughout the city, Shanta takes action where she sees an opportunity to make her community a better place. Shanta is a huge supporter of reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and has been helping to teach and spread the true history of Turtle Island.

Shanta would like to improve the quality of life for all in Markham—Unionville, especially when it comes to better transportation, healthcare and food security.
