Clancy calls for support for Kitchener tenants facing eviction

February 18, 2024

KITCHENER — Ontario Greens Deputy Leader and MPP for Kitchener Centre Aislinn Clancy released the following statement in response to news that residents of a Kitchener apartment building have started receiving eviction notices following the sale of their building.

“The recent suite of eviction notices being issued to residents of a downtown apartment in my riding is deeply troubling.

From the conversations I’ve been having, it’s clear that there’s a lot of fear right now.

Residents are worried that they are being evicted so that the landlord can raise the rent. Many of these tenants are seniors, single parents, and low-income folks who can’t afford to have their rents go up.

Ontario’s Landlord and Tenant Board has long been inadequate when it comes to preventing wrongful evictions.

I’m calling on the Ford government to commit to real eviction protections for Ontario’s renters, including implementing vacancy control to limit rent increases between tenancies and strengthening penalties and enforcement for renovictions and bad-faith evictions.

No tenant in Ontario should be forced out of an affordable place to call home in the name of higher profits.”
