Party History
The Green Party of Ontario (GPO) became an officially registered political party in 1983, and has been growing ever since, expanding its membership and rising in the polls.
In the 1999 provincial election, we fielded 58 candidates, and became the fourth largest party in the province. We continued to grow as a party, and in 2007 we ran a full slate of candidates and garnered over 8 per cent of the vote.

Electing Our First MPP
In 2018, we made history by electing the first Green MPP at Queen’s Park. Mike Schreiner was elected in Guelph with over 45 per cent of the vote.
During his time at Queen's Park, Mike has been an outspoken advocate for affordable housing, connected communities, better public services and protections for Ontario’s farmland and natural spaces.
In 2019, Mike passed Ontario's first-ever Green bill, protecting electric vehicle drivers.
Since his most recent re-election, Mike has introduced legislation to stop subsidizing oil and gas companies and to establish a Foodbelt that safeguards Ontario’s farmland for future generations.

Our Caucus Doubles
In November 2023, we elected our second MPP when Aislinn Clancy, a school social worker and city council member, scored a landslide victory in a Kitchener Centre by-election.
She was re-elected in 2025 with 51.4 per cent of the vote.
At Queen’s Park, Aislinn is a strong advocate for affordable housing. She has put forward legislation to hold bad-acting landlords accountable for renovictions and called on the government to take a housing-first approach to ending homelessness.

Meet the Team
The Green Party is made up of people just like you.
We're small business owners, teachers, doctors, scientists, parents, nurses, workers and professionals, who think the current political system is broken and simply want to make the world a better place.
Our Vision
Our vision for Ontario is focused on:
- More Affordable Homes and Communities
- Creating Good Green Jobs
- Protecting the People and Places We Love
- Making Life More Affordable
Working together, we can build a province that is fair and affordable.
More Affordable Homes and Communities
We can create thriving neighbourhoods with homes people can afford, close to their friends and family. Neighbourhoods near transit that you’ll want to raise a family in, start a small business in, or grow old in.
By building more kinds of homes, strengthening protections for renters and investing in non-profit and co-op housing, we can bring down housing costs for everyone, end homelessness and give people the tools they need to thrive.
Creating Good Green Jobs
We can create good clean jobs and strengthen local economies by investing in made-in-Ontario energy, home-grown tech and manufacturing. Ontario has all the talent, resources and people to be a world-leader in a resilient, self-reliant green economy.
Protecting the People and Places We Love
The climate crisis is making life less affordable, damaging our homes and communities and harming our health. We believe in protecting the natural spaces that keep us safe from things like floods and heatwaves. We also believe in strengthening protections for the farms and farmers that power Ontario’s $50-billion food and farming economy.
Making Life More Affordable
We know that housing is the number one driver of Ontario’s affordability crisis. We have a plan to make homes more affordable and crack down on the financialization of housing. We also know that we can tackle the rising cost of living by investing in lower-cost renewable energy, better public services and cheaper, more reliable transit.
Make a DONATION
Our work is funded by grassroots supporters like you. With your help, we can build an Ontario where we tackle housing affordability, act on climate and improve our health. Every little bit helps.
